Very faded black and white photograph of men, women and children working in the Hops field at Hiram Walker Farms in Sandwich East Township circa 1894; the people are surrounded by crops on high poles and several poles have been laid down beside them; some of the workers are sitting on a bench or piece of equipment with a roof overhead;

History

Hops were an important part of the brewing process and were grown in abundance in Essex County before 1900. Hiram Walker employed about 600 people for four weeks at the end of each summer and yielded about 1000 pounds of hops per acre on his extensive farm near Walkerville.
