History

Peter was a World War II child evacuee sponsored by Ford Motor Company. The trunk was bought by his father, in England July 1940, to hold Peter's belongings on the trip to Canada. His father worked for Ford in England since 1929. Peter and 11 other children were brought to Amherstburg, which was the staging area for the Ford's sponsored children. Peter stayed in Amherstburg with the Angstrum Family on Riverfront Rd, he was the only one of the 12 children brought over at that time that stayed in Amherstburg. He was 13 years of age. He stayed there for 3 1/2 years. He attended General Amherst High School. He was considering joining the RCAF but was dissuaded by his Aunt (what he called his sponsor mom). However his notice of recall came and on Dec 25, 1943 he was sent back to England. In England he joined the war effort. He finished his military training on the day the war ended with Japan, therefore he never was involved with combat. He then worked at Ford in England. He returned to Canada in September 1953 and worked at Ford here and in Oshawa. Peter also worked at the Francois Baby House (museum) as assistant curator for two months in 1958.
