Description

tallcase clock; wooden case; made locally; metal clockworks (bought in Colchester)

History

Clock was given to Elizabeth Foster Honor (donor's mother) by Elizabeth Lypps Fox, a distant cousin born in Colchester in 1823, who during her final illness was nursed by Elizaberth Foster and gave her the clock in gratitute. The working parts of the clock were transported down the Detroit River by two men in a canoe in the early part of the 19th century. The men, possibly smugglers, sold the face and works of the clock to members of the Fox family who lived in Amherstburg. The frame was built out of wood, local cherry and walnut. The weights of the clock appeared to be blackened tin cans, which were filled with bits of paper and buckshot. The clock was brought down out of donor's attic following her mother's death. The clock was restored to sporadical working conditions by a local clock maker and later donated to the museum.
