Description

embroidery signature quilt “Canadian Expeditionary Forces/ Lieut. Col. E. S. Wigle/ Officer Commanding/ First Division/ Ontario/ 18th Battalion” is in the centre square., colours red white and blue;

History

Made during WWI as a means of raising money for patriotic work. Embroidered on the quilt is the "18th Battalion Canadian Expeditionary Forces" and also the names of people who contributed to the fundraising efforts. The quilt is covered in individual signatures (Windsor residents), as well as organizations and businesses from the Windsor/Essex County area. One of the squares has Lt. Col. H. R. Casgrain/ 3rd Hospital France” in the centre. Another square is dedicated to the Border Chapter IODE and its members (one of which is Alice Casgrain). It was gifted to the museum in 1965 from Mrs. George F. Macdonald (who received it from Miss Matheson the niece of Mrs. Casgrain.) It seems that Dr. and Mrs. Casgrain might have recieved the quilt from the Border Chapter of the IODE and had it with them in Bushey Park, England. Dr. H. R. Casgrain was a surgeon of the 21st Regiment of the Essex Fusiliers during WWI.
