History

"Owned by the Hon. John Elmsly, 1801-1863, born in Toronto. He served the Royal Navy as a volunteer, mid-shipman and finally lieutenant, 1815-1824, returning from the service to live in Toronto. He was a member of the of the Legislatives and Executive Councils of Upper Canada but being liberal minded and somewhat impulsive, became a black sheep as far as the "Family Compact" was concerned and resigned. In 1837-38, he served in the Provincial Marine, and according to "Catholic Pioneers of Upper Canada", led the party which cut out William Lyon McKenzie's "Caroline" and sent her over Niagara Falls. Since the "Family Compact" was a close knit group, it is probable he and his father were well acquainted with the Baby's. The only other connection is through myself, my great grandmother on my mother's side was Clara Baby, daughter of Francis. The Hon. John Elmsley was my great grandfather" quote from donor.
