History

Made by James Monroe Jones, 1821-1905. Jones was the first and only black gunsmith in Canada at the time and was also one of the best craftsman. Jones was born in Raleigh, North Carolina. After graduating in 1849 from Oberlin College, Ohio, he moved to Chatham, Canada West, where he became a gunsmith. He was married in 1854 in London, Canada West. Jones's yellow frame house and shop were on Head Street (now Grand Ave.) in Chatham. He is said to have been able to speak seven languages, including Latin. After half a century's residence in Chatham, Jones died in Ann Arbor Michigan.
