History

Portable writing desk presented to William Lewis Baby on his 10th birthday in 1822 by Hon. Thomas Clarke of Niagara Falls, who was an acquantaince of Jacques Baby. William was the son of Jacques Baby. The Hon. Jacques Baby was the brother of Francois Baby who built his farmhouse on what is now Pitt Street West in 1812. The house has been renovated and now appears much as it did in that year. Mrs. Stodgell, donor through Mr. Fuller, is the daughter of Charles Edwin Baby, who died in 1944, and the great-granddaughter of Hon. Jacques Baby, a member of the Legislative Council of Upper Canada.
