History

During the 1948 reconstruction of the porch at the Pitt Street entrance to the museum, this axe head was discovered. The image of a crown and the letters "RA" indicate the Royal Artillery. It is believed that the axe was left by the Royal Artillery while they were on site of the Francois Baby House on Aug.15-16, 1812, during the War of 1812.
