History

Hollow shot was cast to reduce the weight. Shells of similar construction to hollow shot, were filled with gunpowder and a slow-burning fuse. During August of 1812, a shell was thrown from the British gun battery near Francois Baby House over Jefferson Ave. in Detroit and fell upon the roof of Augustus Langdon's house. "Coming down through the house, which was two stories in height, it went through to a cellar. The family had just time to flee from the house, when the shell exploded, almost wrecking the building." (Lossing 1868). It was found on the east side of the Francois Baby House by workmen in 1948.
