History

flintlock : a lock for an old-fashioned gun or pistol, having a flint fixed in the cock, or hammer, which, on striking the battery or cover of the pan, ignited the priming, which communicated its fire to the charge through the touchhole. It superceded the wheel-lock early in the 17th century and was superceded by the percussion-lock early in the 19th century.
