History

The classification of carboy and demijohn are usually applied to any large bottle, but nineteenth-century Canadian glassblowers were quite specific about their use and form. Demijohns were often free-blown and finished by using a pontil rod. They were globular in shape and were used as containers for wine or coal oil. Demijohns were supplied with willow covers, but many of these became damaged and were removed before they reached collector's hands.
