History

Belonged to grandfather of donor's husband (captain of the steamer Tashmoo), who immigrated from Scotland to the Glencoe area. Donor says this lamp was brought from Scotland. No date available. It was used by early pioneers, this was a type of grease lamp that was hung on cabin walls. Animal or fish fat was used as fuel and a cotton wick was placed within it and lit. The problem with many of these lamps was their tendency to drip grease along the wooden walls causing a serious fire hazard.
