Description

Black bicorne of ribbed fabric; quilted lining with drawstrings on interior; applied fabric rosette and 7 silver metal chains connected to scalloped pin on one side.

History

Belonged to John Coatesworth Iler, born in Colchester in 1828. His grandfather had come to Essex County in 1768 from Pennsylvania. J.C. Iler married Adaline Buchanan (also born in Essex County) in 1850. They had 3 children and 12 grandchildren. In 1883, he was made sherriff of the County of Essex. Donor's late husband Iler A. Irvine was a direct descendant and asked that these items be donated to the museum.
