domed leather hinged lid; three longitudinal wood straps on bottom; iron handles on ends; strap iron reinforcing over ends of lid; blue paper lines inside of lid; strips of scalloped leather trim fastened with brass tacks

History

Hide covered chest, probably bought about 1820 on the Cumberland Road in Ohio by Hans Georg Jasperson, a north German immigrant. Married at Lewisburg, Ohio, Jasperson was in St. Clair County, Michigan, by 1826. There, in partnership with Peter Frederick Verhoeff, he became a very successful merchant. By 1831, Verhoeff & Co. had moved to Sandwich Township, Essex County, Upper Canada. Jasperson was the ancestor of the Jasperson family of Kingsville.
