History

"An old cannon believed to be used during or prior to the War of 1812 was recovered from the Detroit River off Boblo Island in July, 1947 by John J. Wacheski of the Maintenance Department. The cannon was possibly used in the battle of Lake Erie on Sept. 10, 1813. A two pounder cannon is believed to have been dumped over board, because it had been misloaded, from the British vessel "General Hunter" before the battle of Lake Erie. The cannon was found off the mouth of the Detroit River lacking its firing mechanism like other British guns used in the battle. The poorly equipped British had to fire their guns by snapping their flintlock pistols at them.
