History

snuff was ground tobacco that was snuffed or drawn in through the nose. It was popular in the 18th and 19th centuries and was kept in decorative or plain boxes. It was believed to have medicinal purposes. It was a social gesture to offer snuff to someone, and it was popular among both the French and the British. It went out of fashion in c.1850.
