History

Made by grandmother of donor - Mrs. William Henry Laur, who was born in the 1830's in the state of New York, but who lived most of her life in Elgin County near Aylmer. Died in 1914. Probably came to Elgin County as a bride. In this traditional design known as the "log cabin", altering strips of light and dark fabric, or logs, were sewn around a red square representing the hearth of the home. When each block was finished, the quilt maker arranged them in one of a variety of log cabin patterns, including "Straight Furrows", "Streak O' Lightning", and the popular "Barn Raising" pattern shown here. Like many other traditional patchwork patterns, the names given to these designs reflect the domestic and rural environment that defined the lives of so many Ontario women during the 18th and 19th centuries.
