History

Received by donor while she was working at CKLW Radio, 1991 to 1992. The items date from the late 1960s and the 1970s (with the exception of 993.21.15, which is early '80s), when CKLW AM 800 (locally known as "The Big 8") was the 3rd largest radio station in the world and no.1 in the Detroit/Windsor market. Song lists (93.21.5-93.21.5) were compiled weekly by Rosalie Trombley, then the music director of CKLW and determined by record sales from local stores, requests from the CKLW hit line and Rosalie's own personal opinion, which could make or break a hit. She was known in the industry as the girl with the golden ear. These items although intended for public release, were kept on file at the station for future reference by Annette Dupuis, an employee of station for thirty years. She gave them to me. In 1932, the first year of the station original call letter CKOK were officially changed to CKLW. The station transmitted on AM800 until the late 1950's when CKLW FM 93.9 came on air and the two stations ran simulcast programming. Not until the late 1970's or early 1980's did the two run independent programming. This item features disk jockey Tom Shannon. Tom is currently (at time of donation) one of the morning personalities on CKWL FM.
