Description

Skirt and jacket; mauve grosgrain synthetic fabric, machine and handsewn; jacket: lined with grey satin; long sleeves slightly pointed at bottom, gathered above wrist and held with a twisted loop of cord covered with same fabric; horizontal band of same fabric around waist, edged with same-fabric piping; front opening fastens with a knot of same fabric and loop of same fabric, both attached to waist band with looped same-fabric cord decorations; 'V' neckline at front; 3-tier collar; bottom is pointed at both sides at front, square at back; middle tier is round at front with 2 points at back; top tier is same as middle but narrower and made of ivory grosgrain fabric; knot and loop decoration at centre back on waist band; slightly gathered to waist band above and below it; Skirt: plain hem faced with mauve synthetic fabric (not grosgrain); centre front has 1 panel from waist to hem, the rest is made of 4 panels which are slightly gathered to a wide wasitband; back slit opening fastens with hooks/eyes; waistband faced with white cotton grosgrain; 1 bone on each side of opening.

History

Belonged to Mrs. Nellie Newland (nee Baxter), wife of Samuel George Newland who was an engineer at Ford Motor Co. They lived at 1670 Grand Marais West and also at the northwest corner of Pelissier and Shepherd West (Windsor).
