Description

"FACTS IN MATHEMATICAL GEOGRAPHY" by Alexander Laing, who invented the Laing's Planetarium; black paper cover with gold lettering (see Marks); fifty-five pages (white paper with black letters); rectangular; pages joined with staples at spine; name printed in ink on first page (see Marks).

History

Goes with planetarium (993.9.1); Belonged to Dr. Grace E. Marshall and Helen A. Iler (great aunts of the donor) who then passed it along to the donor. Grace and Helen were private tutors in Rochester, N.Y. They were born in this area, probaby at Iler Beach just east of Colchester. They lived in a home at Iler Beach not far from what is now known as Park Homestead, but was known at the time as the Fox home. The donor says that there used to be a very old pear tree on the property where Helen and Grace lived. The house has since been demolished, although the pear tree may still be there. They also spent time in Ridgetown. Both Grace and Helen went to McMaster University, and Grace went on to Harvard and there, the donor thinks, obtained a doctorate (probably one of the first women to do so at Harvard). The planetarium was used to teach the Earth's position in relation to the sun and moon.
