History

"In the 1860's, the fluting iron appeared, a device for making ruffles on a smaller scale and many folds at a time. It consisted of two parts: a rectangular plate of iron, the upper surface of which is corrugated, and a curved plate with handle corrugated on its lower surface to fit the flat plate. In use, the flat plate was heated, the starched fabric was placed over it, and the curved plate rocked over the cloth and corrugations to produce the fluting."
