Description

Rectangular; cream-coloured paper with grey ink; the Priory is in the centre, surrounded by a stone wall; right foreground has 4 deer; to the left of the building are 2 people driving in a barouche; left foreground has several trees; title is handwritten and handprinted on back bottom (see Inscription).

History

There is debate as to who is the actual artist. People have attributed it to either Catherine Reynolds (1784 - 1864 ) or her sister Margaret (1765 - 1855). The Reynolds family is listed in the 1782 Detroit Census. Following Detroit being ceded to the Americans (1796), the Reynolds settled in Amherstburg. One of Catherine & Margaret's brothers, Robert Reynolds, was responsible for the construction of the historic house, Belle Vue.
