Description

Royal blue silk taffeta day dress; long sleeves with 3 same-fabric bands around wrists; shoulder caps with same-fabric piping design; round neckline with wide collar, trimmed with same piping; front opening fastens with hooks/eyes on bodice and wood fabric-covered buttons on skirt; 3 bands of same fabric on each side of opening on skirt; bodice trimmed with same-fabric piping design; Lined with ivory silk; A-line, 5-panelled skirt is very slightly gathered to bodice at above-natural waistline; padded hem; bow-like ornament of same fabric at back waist; same-fabric belt is attached to this, fastens at the front.

History

Bought in Ireland c. 1825 by William McCormick for his wife, Mary Cornwall McCormick. Donor's maiden name was McCormick. William McCormick was a successful Essex County landholder, politician and militia officier.
