1,456 postcards & postcard books; no local images; postcards collected by Margaret Bowlby

History

Margaret Bowlby was the daughter of Judge A.D. Bowlby and Edith Ellen Adams. She resided at 806 Victoria Avenue for most of her life. Margaret had many different collections. She donated many different objects over the years to the Museum, including women's clothing, a large collection of doll's clothes, documents and furniture. Her large postcard collection, which probably contains close to 1000 postcards, was left to the Municipal Archives following her death in 1989. Some of this collection has since been transferred to the museum. Margaret's postcard collection is fascinating in its breadth. There are postcards, while friends and family also sent her cars from abroad. The postcards range in date from the early to the middle of the 20th century. These postcards provide an interesting peek into the extensive travelling done by a woman and a Windsorite in the first half of this century. Since Margaret died in 1989, the museum did not get the chance to ask her why she collected all these postcards. Maybe she collected them in order to bring a piece of her trip home with her, or maybe she collected them because they intrigued her, or because they were an easy item to collect. We'll never know for sure, because there are potentially as many different reasons to collect as there are collectors.
