Description

Rectangular; cream-coloured paper with grey ink; cathedral is in centre, seen at a distance; foreground is water with 2 small boats sailing, one with 2 men aboard, the other with 1 man aboard; between water and cathedral are several rows of buildings; left foreground has a large tree along the shore; there is also a long, low building behind the tree and one boat; at one end a man and woman are conversing, at the other end are 2 men; watermark (see Inscription); wooden frame painted silver; light grey cardboard mat; covered with glass; back of frame covered with brown paper; 2 hanging loops at sides; gold sticker at bottom centre with black letters: "A & M GALLERY FRAMING INC./...[address]".

History

There is debate as to who is the actual artist. People have attributed it to either Catherine Reynolds (1784 - 1864 ) or her sister Margaret (1765 - 1855). The Reynolds family is listed in the 1782 Detroit Census. Following Detroit being ceded to the Americans (1796), the Reynolds settled in Amherstburg. One of Catherine & Margaret's brothers, Robert Reynolds, was responsible for the construction of the historic house, Belle Vue.
