History

This coverlet came from the home of Mr. and Mrs. James Appelbe, Trafalgar, Ontario. Tradition in the family says that it was purchased from a Yankee peddler. Their daughter, Ellen, married Robert Adams, parents of Mrs. A.D. Bowlby, mother of donor. James Applebe came to Ontario from Ireland about 1815 as a boy of 15 or 16. He married the daughter of a pioneer family, Jemima Kaitling, and they lived in a frame house in Trafalgar on Dundas St. between Toronto and Hamilton. Mrs. Appelbe died in 1880 and Mr. Appelbe in 1878. Mr. Appelbe was a business man, one of the founders of the Bank of Toronto and was treasurer of the township. Woven on to the coverlet is "Made by Philip schum Lancaster, PA. Washington - 1869"
