Description

Trunk of cotton wood tree, called "Cotonnier" in french; tree may be a sycamore

History

"Trunk of cotton wood tree in French called "Cotonnier". I am not certain as to the year this tree was cut and carved by my great grandfather, Francois (Xavier) Villiere dit St. Louis, born 1796, then passed on to his son Leandre, then Alexander, then to me. A.P. St. Louis, grandfather of Leandre was born in 1826. I believe that it was felled from our farm, Lot 123. I well remember it's use as a flour container. This wood is so hard the mice could not even gnaw through it." the donor said that there was another one, a smaller one in size. The large upper portion of our barrel is where the lower branches started to grow."
