Description

Cream lace over cream net; over left shoulder is a drape of grey gauze, attached above waist at centre front with 4 pink satin "apples" and at left back hem with 3 pleats handstitched down; the gauze is printed with pink and green flowers; the point which falls over the left sleeve is trimmed with tiny pink satin "apples"; three-quarter length sleeves are trimmed with pink satin ribbon and a row of tiny pink satin "apples" running upwards; round neck; back centre opening fastens with hooks and thread loops and has 3 vertical tucks running parallel to it on each side; front centre is a long vertical triangular insert of net from neck to waist with 6 vertical tucks, trimmed with more tiny "apples" in a vertical row and edged with pink ribbon; bottom centre is pleated to create a slight peplum effect; machine and handsewn.

History

Belonged to Mrs. Nellie Newland (nee Baxter), wife of Samuel George Newland who was an engineer at Ford Motor Co. They lived at 1670 Grand Marais West and also at the northwest corner of Pelissier and Shepherd West (Windsor).
