History

Given to George F.Macdonald by Lucille Cruise for the George Macdonald Collection. Belonged to Lydia Douglas, great-grandmother of Lucille Cruise, and grand-niece of Sir Charles Douglas who brought relief to Quebec City while under siege, 1776. These types of brooches are commonly known as Luckenbooth Brooches. Lukenbooth is a Scottish term for Lockable stalls or workshop, where such trinkets would have been sold, particularly in Edinburgh. This heart shaped brooch is of a style traditionally associated with love tokens.
