History

Found in a pioneer granary on the bank of the Thames River, about 2 miles from Thamesville, Ontario. Farm once owned by the Luke Family. Francis Robinson of the Detroit Art Institute thinks this piece was worn by a renegade French officer during the "patriot" troubles of 1838. Chatellerault, a French govt. armory, about 30 miles north-east of Poitiers, producing small arms up to 1940. Found with a flintlock cock decorated with fleurs-de-lis emblems. There is no evidence that this piece was functional but was more than likely was a souvenir brought back from France and left in the barn in which it was found.
