History

Belonged to donor's mother, circa 1885 Made of wool, the Assumption Sash or Ceinture Fleche, was an important part of 18th and 19th century Métis (Indigenous and French mixed) clothing. This popular trade item was worn around the waist and helped to retain body heat and served as a belt for holding tools. Considered to be primarily fashionable among French Canadians, but quickly became a popular trade item with the Indigenous population.
