Materials

METAL, STEEL METAL, BRASS

Description

Brown metal; shaped like a pair of pliers with 2 handles joined with a rivet; end of one handle has a thin, flat piece of brass attached to it; a thicker piece of brass is attached perpendicularly; when handles are squeezed, this pushes against a groove in the other handle.

History

Letter from J.M. Fulton of Research station of Agriculture Canada: "I would suggest that it certainly appears to have been used for installing a ring in a hog's nose. While I cannot specifically rule our use of this tool for installing metal bands in an animal's ear, it seems to be a better bet that it was used to install a ring in the hog's nose. Forty or more years ago (from 1980) pigs were raise during the summer months in the open yards or pastures and the ring was applied to the nose to prevent them rooting up the sod and or diggning holes under fences.
