Description

Skirt of a 2-piece suit (blouse: 988.48.4.01). White linen. Eleven gored panels. Sewn smoothly to same-fabric waistband. Back slit opening (27cm long) fastens with hooks & eyes. Four 3cm wide horizontal bands of same fabric sewn above hem around sides and back; the bottom band goes around entire skirt, the others have right angles upwards at front to form 'L' shapes. Machine- and handsewn. Unlined.

History

On paper pinned to suit when donated: "White linen skirt and separate blouse with Irish crochet lace. This also was Mrs. Bowlby's found in the attic. Skirts at the turn of the century were real dust catchers if not eye catchers."
