History

A swift is a kind of adjustable diameter on which a skein of yarn is placed in order to be wound off. These were often home-made and took many forms. Swifts used in Upper Canada often were the work of the handyman in the family and thus took a variety of forms. Some were crude, while others showed skill and fine workmanship; but all of them did the job.
