History

These spikes and the cannon ball were taken from one of four small gunboats attached to General Proctor's army at Fort Detroit during the war of 1812. In 1813 when Proctor's forces evacuated Detroit and retreated along the shores of Lake St.. Clair and the River Thames, these boats were one by one burned by the British force to prevent them falling into the hands of the Americans. This was the last of the four boats that were destroyed prior to the Battle of Moraviantown, Oct. 5th 1813 in which the famous Shawnee chief Tecumseh lost his life. This boat was raised in the summer of 1900. Presented by Nell E. Radley to the Macdonald Historical Collection.
