History

This .75 calibre British musket is an arsenal conversion from flint-lock to percussion. The cock has been replaced with a percussion hammer. The lock plate displays a crown under which the initials V.R. (Victoria Regina) appear. "Tower" refers to the Tower of London arsenal. The "Tower" musket in all its variations, introduced about 1725, was affectionately known to the troops as the "Brown Bess". The Bess remained in service in Canada until about 1855. Examples are probably still being used somewhere in the world today.
