History

Used in determining latitude, in terms of degrees of elevation of sun above horizon at high noon. High noon was found with another instrument, optically. Then time checked against chronometer, which is set for time at a known meridian of longitude and deviation gives longitude. This one was used on the Great Lakes by Capt. Malott (owned on March 1991 by Beacher Russell, Leamington). Capt. William Malott b.27 Sept. 1822, res. Gosfield S. began sailing on Lakes, later built dock on lake front of home property. During Civil War, it shipped grains. Capt. Malott built Wave, Eureke, Alzora and Antelope on home property. He moved to Kingsville, built a dock there, sold it to the government, became a harbormaster. Commissioned Capt.. of the Essex Militia, 1856. He died in Kingsville, March 5, 1890
