Description

18K gold watch (.01) and chain (.02). Watch has plain white face with black Roman numerals and navy blue hour and minute hands (no second hand); back has engraved initials "CS" (see Provenance); back opens on a hinge, plain inside except for maker's marks (see Marks); watch winds by crown on top; over the crown is a loop to which the chain is attached; chain is of circular links, joined 4 across; gold circular slide through which chain passes has engraved initials "MB" (see Provenance).

History

Given to Martha Bruce upon her graduation from university. Martha Bruce was a sister to the donor's grandmother (Mary Bruce Straith) then passed on to her niece Catherine Straith (1874-1959) upon her graduation. Catherine was a teacher and a Windsor City council woman. Both Martha Bruce's and Catherine Straith's initials are carved upon it.
