History: These gibbet irons were used in Sandwich until about 1830. After a convicted criminal was executed, the law demanded that the corpse be placed in these gibbet irons and hung from a pole for public display. The unpleasant sight and smell of rotting flesh was meant to deter potential law-breakers.
