Description

iron; black, brown; bar hooked at one end; torso hoop; 2 semi-circles hooked together; leg irons, 2 round hoops pinned by a link; neck hoop round with loop at one end.

History

These gibbet irons were used in Sandwich until about 1830. After a convicted criminal was executed, the law demanded that the corpse be placed in these gibbet irons and hung from a pole for public display. The unpleasant sight and smell of rotting flesh was meant to deter potential law-breakers.
