History

In earlier times, wood carving or "whittling" was one of the most popular forms of relaxation. Sometimes a wood carver would turn out a "whimsey". Whimsies are intricately carved curiousities or puzzles that served no useful purpose other than to occupy the carver and demonstrate his ability. The better the carver, the more elaborate the project, and accomplished whittlers delighted in these tests of skill. Today, whimsies are widely recognised as one of the most expressive and personal forms of folk carving. Prisoners and sailors, who had unlimited amounts of free time would often carve complex wooden chains from a single piece of wood.
