History

From Assumption church, a 22 stop Erben organ from New York installed by Mr. Erben on Sept. 3, 1847. This organ was donated to Assumption Church (the 4th construction) by Charles Baby and Arthur Rankin in 1847. Charles Baby, son of Jacques Baby [who was the first Catholic member of the Executive Council of Upper Canada] was a distinguished local office holder, having been appointed Clerk of the Peace of the Western District in 1836. The gothic-style organ was purchased from noted New York organ builder Henry Erban, costing $2 200. The tremendous organ arrived on the wharf at Detroit, in parts clearly marked for delivery to Assumption Church and with the names “Charles Baby and Arthur Rankin” prominently displayed. This conspicuous delivery garnered media attention, with the Detroit Daily Advertiser publicizing the event.
