History: Found in Janisse house, built about 1851 for Jerome Janisse and his bride, Caroline Parent, in Sandwich East Township. The use of pine, the whittled pegs, the lightness of the hinges and other details combine to suggest an earlier date, implying that the piece was handed down from an ancestor. The wear on the sill on either side of the center strap must have been caused by generations of children stepping up to reach the top shelf. The paint is original.
