Description

Business Man on a Horse, 1989; bronze; 220 cm A life sized bronze cast of a hatted man sitting astride a horse. The figures are modeled realistically with a somewhat smoothed and rounded appearance indicative of McElcheran’s work. The horse stand quietly, ears pricked and head turned slightly into its right flank while its rider looks straight ahead, with head slightly tipped upward, hands at rest on horse’s mane.

History

Business Man on a Horse is a William McElcheran creation which is a bronze which stands 9’ in height. His sculptures can be found in corporate collections around the world. He has produced public commissions in Canada, the United States, Germany, Italy and Japan. This piece was installed in the Odette Sculpture Park in 1997. It is located in Centennial Park between Curry Ave and McKay Ave. In this piece, Business Man on a Horse, William McElcheran presents us with his now famous figure of the befuddled businessman awkwardly seated on his “trusted steed.” It is as if he is a contemporary descendant of a triumphant general of the past returning from the war. His humorous “businessmen” are found in corporate collections all over the world. His subjects are not just the focus of his jokes but are under his protection and he asks that we, as viewers, care for them too. In the Spring of 2014 the Windsor Star had a "Sculpture Park Showdown" contest similar to the bracket challenge for NCAA March Madness. There were 5 rounds in total. Business Man on a Horse was out after round two.
