Chicken and the Egg; chicken is painted steel industrial chain; egg is white marble; chicken 18 x 1.5 x 12; egg 3'6" long and 1'6" in diameter An oversized silhouette of a chicken rendered out of industrial chain, stands protectively over her white marble egg.

History

Chicken and Egg is Morton Katz’s whimsical portrayal of one of the oldest riddles, “What came first?” The use of negative space outlining the shape of the bird, suggests fragility, in comparison to the solidity of the marble egg. Katz himself collected every one of the five hindered industrial sprocket links which were then carefully wielded to form this endearing shape. The egg is carved marble from Quebec and is 3’6” in length and 1’6” in diameter. The chicken stands 18’ in height. It was installed in the Odette Sculpture Park in the year 1999. Chicken and the Egg is located in Centennial Park between Bridge Ave and Campbell Ave. This sculpture differs greatly from his other works found in the Park like Sisters II. Morton Katz has 4 sculptures in the sculpture park: Sisters, Sisters II, Chicken and the Egg and The Three Fates. In the Spring of 2014 the Windsor Star had a "Sculpture Park Showdown" contest similar to the bracket challenge for NCAA March Madness. There were 5 rounds in total. The Chicken and the Egg was out after round one.
