Description

Consolation; bronze; 5 ft tall Two bronze ladies sit side by side, front to back, with the one leaning on the others shoulder with her hand and seemingly whispering in her ear. The ladies bodies are rendered smooth and polished with the detail being left to the strong and intense facial expressions. The figures are each dressed in a simple dress which falls below each of their knees. Both figures have each of their feet planted firmly on the ground in sensible, comfortable shoes. They both are wearing simple bobbed hairstyles cut just below the ears.

History

Consolation is a Joe Rosenthal piece installed in the Odette Sculpture Park in 1997, in Assumption Park at the foot of Askin Ave. It portrays two human figures (both women) seated in opposite directions, supporting one another. They have been characterized as having an “enduring universal toughness” seemingly grounded, solid with an ability to hold their own. According to Rosenthal’s own notes, they have a “substantial inner fortitude”. The City of Windsor is privileged to own several of his works. Consolation portrays human figures comforting each other in trying times. Like most of Rosenthal’s art, the human form is presented with impressive weight and rounded shapes displaying a substantial inner fortitude. They seem solid and able to hold their own ground. Joe Rosenthal has three sculptures included in the sculpture park: Consolation, Lady and Neighbours. In the Spring of 2014 the Windsor Star had a "Sculpture Park Showdown" contest similar to the bracket challenge for NCAA March Madness. There were 5 rounds in total. Consolation was out after round three.
