History

Charles Swann was Hiram Walker's farm manager ca 1877-1883. Hops were an important part of the brewing process and were grown in abundance in Essex County before 1900. Hiram Walker employed about 600 people for four weeks at the end of each summer and yielded about 1000 pounds of hops per acre on his extensive farm near Walkerville.
