Black and white photograph of the construction of the Michigan Central Railroad Tunnel under the Detroit River; the two tubes for the tunnel have been laid and buried in a deep trench; the open ends are visible in the foreground of the photograph and are scattered with wooden planks; a crane sits atop the tubes and additional planks and building materials are strewn about both trench banks and on the top.

History

Construction began in 1906 and the tunnel under the Detroit River was opened in 1910. Butler Bros. Construction Company of New York City were contracted to complete the work.
