Description

Black and white photograph of section #4, Hull 34 of the Michigan Central Railroad Tunnel before it was placed beneath the Detroit River; the tunnel is on the right side of the photograph and the front section has been boarded over with wooden planks; in the centre of the photograph the metal hull is clearly visible; on the left side of the photo is a scaffolding with a ladder running from the ground to the top; there is a second ladder leaning up against the hull; building supplies are lying on the ground around the tunnel.

History

Construction began in 1906 and the tunnel under the Detroit River was opened in 1910. Butler Bros. Construction Co. of New York City were contracted to complete the work.
