Description

Black and white photograph of tubes being taken out into the Detroit River during the building of the Michigan Central Railroad Tunnel; a large section of the tunnel is in the water; it has two tubes running through the centre and there are towers and cylinders on top; there is a barge with "Butler Bros. Construction Co." painted on the side travelling to the right of the hull; there are rowboats in the water around the hull and a number of men standing on shore watching.

History

Construction began in 1906 and the railway tunnel under the Detroit River opened for service in 1910. Butler Bros. Construction Co. of New York City were contracted to complete the work.
