Description

Rectangular; cream-coloured paper with grey ink; palace is on right side; foreground is water; right foreground has several gondolas with men poling them; left background shows a distant row of buildings, behind which is the sun in a sunburst effect; border on all sides: .5cm wide at bottom, .25cm wide at top and sides; watermark (see Inscription) is vertical in centre; title is handwritten in black ink at back bottom (see Inscription).

History

There is debate as to who is the actual artist. People have attributed it to either Catherine Reynolds (1784 - 1864 ) or her sister Margaret (1765 - 1855). The Reynolds family is listed in the 1782 Detroit Census. Following Detroit being ceded to the Americans (1796), the Reynolds settled in Amherstburg. One of Catherine & Margaret's brothers, Robert Reynolds, was responsible for the construction of the historic house, Belle Vue.
